Q: What is Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging?

A: Thermography is “a non-invasive diagnostic technique that allows the examiner to visualize and quantify changes in skin surface temperature. An infrared scanning device is used to convert infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface into electrical impulses that are visualized in color on a monitor. This visual image graphically maps the body temperature and is referred to as a thermogram.

Non-contact thermography, thermographic imaging, or medical thermology is the field of thermography that uses infrared images of the human skin to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Medical thermology is sometimes referred to as medical infrared imaging or tele-thermology and utilizes thermographic cameras.

Restated, medical thermology is the use of infrared (IR) imaging to assess skin temperature as an extension of the clinician’s physical exam to aid in the formation of a medical diagnosis or treatment plan. Medical Thermology does not condone those who purport that “Thermography” can find disease by looking for areas of the body that have abnormal heat or irregular blood flow. IR imaging simply does not have the ability to assess temperature beyond the surface of the skin.”

Q: Is Thermography preventative?

A: It can be! “Inflammation is a precursor to many diseases such as cancer, arthritis, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Heat patterns indicate inflammation, which is a precursor to disease in the body and directly correlates with other diagnostic tests. Early detection of inflammation is critical – you can prevent or intervene in the development process before it turns into disease. Inflammation can also be reduced by dietary changes, supplements, detoxification, stress-reduction, massage, and acupuncture. Measuring inflammation through thermal imaging on a consistent basis can also be very effective at detecting the severity of a medical condition.”
